Teams, known globally as Equipes Notre Dame, began in 1939 in Paris and has since flourished into one of the largest lay movements in the Catholic Church, spanning 92 countries across all continents.​ Teams began in Australia in 1961. At the heart of this movement is the commitment of individual teams of 4-6 couples, ideally with a priest or spiritual counsellor, who meet monthly over a simple meal. These gatherings, preceded by a 'sit down' (couple conversation), provide a space to reflect on life experiences, deepening the shared spirituality of all. Members cherish the faith of family and domestic church that Teams fosters.​
